Florida is acknowledged as the nation’s worst state for walking and biking safety. Ironically, Florida should be a paradise for walking and biking. It has a great climate and it is generally flat. Florida Walks and Bikes is a coalition of Florida organizations and individuals who are taking Florida from worst to first. Please join us as we transform Florida to a place where walking and biking is safe, convenient, available, and practical.
Why walk or bike? “Active transportation” provides exercise and is much healthier than riding around in a steel and glass enclosed motorized wheelchair. Walking and biking are the “green” choices; these modes don’t pollute the air and the fuel is food, not petrochemicals. Bikes and shoes require far fewer resources and energy in manufacturing. In use, biking and walking are, far and away, the most efficient modes of personal transportation. Economically, every time you see someone walking or biking, they are moving for free. Everyone can afford to walk and bike. Biking and walking, unlike other means of transportation, are door-to-door. These modes promote self-reliance and help our country cut down on the $12 billion/month spent on imported oil. Biking and walking involve no wars per gallon. Biking and walking consume very little land for movement or parking. Saving space saves society money as roadways and parking are expensive to build and maintain. Great urban places are always places where people can walk and bike. Biking and walking promote greater density that is common to great, and sustainable, urban spaces. Biking and walking are silent. Biking and walking involve simple technology and de-complicate our lives. Active transportation lets you experience the physial environment. Biking and walking are fun. Move yourself!
Florida Walks and Bikes (FWB) is a non-profit, statewide bicycle-pedestrian advocacy group created in 2011 to educate the public about how to improve walking and bicycling in Florida. We are a coalition of individuals and organizations who want to transform Florida from one of the worst states in the nation for bicycling and walking to being the best.
